Jasmine's Big Surprise
She did get a little curious though, when I brought home a different bag of food the other day. And the scratch-pad was incredibly, Jazzerifically, cool.
But they are not the surprise. Today, after going to work for four hours (on a Saturday), we brought home Jasmine's surprise.
Everyone, meet Asia.
See, when I first decided to adopt a cat, it was for two reasons. The first is that my wife really wanted a kitty. We hadn't gotten one before because I was allergic. But also because cats are Independent. Given our lifestyle, and the frequency with which we are away from home for long periods, I/we figured a cat was a better choice than a dog.
Well, lately, we've been gone more than we originally planned for. And lately, Jasmine has been very happy to see us when we get in. We'd thought about getting her a friend before, but this started us thinking about it all over again. But we were a bit leery. Jasmine didn't do well around the other cats at the shelter, and she's been the only-cat for so long that we have concerns about how well she'll adapt. We went back to the Humane Society of Dallas County and spoke with them. We picked out some likely candidates, including an adorable little boy named Tigger. It turns out that Tigger is not adoptable due to health reasons, so we instead picked Asia.
She is 9 months old, and playful. She did not like being confined in the kitty-carrier on the ride home, and once we got her home and opened up the door to the carrier, she was out, and immediately exploring.
She's very cute, but a little unsure where she fits in.
As expected, Jasmine is ... concerned about this new arrival. While she's allowed the kitten to explore, she wants no part of her, and hisses every time she gets too close. Of course, "too close" has been steadily decreasing in distance, and at one point they were about 6 inches apart with Jasmine just watching the kitten play. Suddenly it was like Jasmine realized 'Hey, I can't let the kitten have too much fun yet!' and she stuck her head right in the middle of the kitten's game, and hissed. For which she soundly got bopped. I don't mind her hissing when the kitten gets too close. I don't want her seeking out the kitten and hissing.
Though we've only had her for 6 hours, we're learning about some of the constants of the kitty world: Boxes. So far, Asia is a more active climber than Jasmine, and has already gotten herself trapped behind a tall stack of boxes.
She's explored most of the house. She's had some water. So far as we know, she hasn't actually used the litter box, but she has sniffed around inside it, and knows its there.
Currently, she's recovering from her stressful day.
Hopefully this will be a successful experiment!
