Scarborough 2005

On Sunday, April 24th, 2005, I competed in what was my third ever event. It marks the one year point since I first participated competitively in the sport, and considering that it's been 10 Months since I last threw in competition, and I have done very little practice, I am quite pleased with the results.

It was a beautiful day to compete. The Temperature started a bit chilly, but quickly rose with the sun to hover in the Low 70's for most of the day. There was Sun with sporadic cloud cover, and late in the day we saw a few drops of rain - though nothing like last year's 'Weight for Splash' events.

I improved my Braemar throw by two and a half feet over last year and added more than a foot to each of my Weight for Distance throws. I did not do so well in the Hammer throw - losing nearly 8 inches over last year's throw. While disappointing, the rest of the day made up for it. I turned the Caber to a score of 10:45 - and while not my personal best with that particular caber, it was my personal best in competition. I added Four feet to my Sheaf and a foot to the Weight for Height.

So the final numbers come out at

Braemar: 18' 9"
Heavy Distance: 23' 0"
Light Distance: 43' 1"
Heavy Hammer: 52' 1.75"
Caber: 10:45 (16' 2" x 87 lbs) - 75 Deg (16' 4" x 105 pounds, one attempt)
Sheaf: 18' 0"
Weight over Bar: 11' 0"

I set personal bests in Braemar, both Weights for Distance, Caber, and Sheaf. I tied my personal best in Weight over Bar.

I took 1st place in Weight over Bar (Three Way Tie), 2nd Place in Caber (Just me baby, just me) and 2nd place in Heavy Distance (Also just me). I took second place overall for my class as well.

So what did I learn from this event? Keep my feet closer to the ground on Weight for Distance. I'm still learning to wind up twice instead of just once, and I tend to get a little high off the ground. This can cause balance issues.

I need more work with the Hammer. I was very timid in my wind-up on this event due to an irrational fear of fouling.

I can get the Weight over Bar 12 feet in the air. Now I just have to make sure I can do it when that's the height of the Bar.

I also learned to let go of the weight. I lost control on my final attempt at Weight over Bar. I tried to regain control, but just couldn't do it. I also didn't let go of the weight. My consolation is that the judges awarded me a gold medal in Gymnastics. Too bad that's not a Highland sport.

There were pictures taken. As soon as any are in my possession, they'll be available for public consumption.
