Weight Loss Surgery

Doctors

  • Dirk I. Rodriguez, M.D. - Based out of Methodist Health Center, Dallas, Dr. Rodriguez is Lys's surgeon. Which, I believe, is enough said.
  • James Davidson, M.D. - Based out of Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. Dr. Davidson is an excellent surgeon with an excellent record. Were it not for some differences of opinion with his staff, Lys would have had her surgery here. The Bari-Active program makes Dr. Davidson's office an excellent choice.
  • Lawrence S. (Larry) Barzune, M.D.
    - Based out of Medical City, Dallas,
Lys's actual Surgery Path begins here. She'd been researching it on-and-off
on the internet for several months. Finally, she and I went to one of Dr. B's
seminars. While, in the end, we did not use his services, much of that decision was
taken out of our hands by our HMO. The only two doctors in Dallas they would
pay for were doctors Davidson and Rodriguez. The information learned at his seminar
was invaluable to continuing her research and helping her determine if this surgery
    really was what she wanted.

Support and Weight Loss

  • E-Diets.com - a web-based weight-loss program similar to Jenny Craig or Weight-Watchers. Only better. They will customize a meal plan for you and create a shopping list. No points, no special (expensive) meals to buy. Everything comes straight from your grocery store. Loads of support in the form of Bulletin Boards and Forums. E-Diets helped Lys lose about 50 pounds (Though she did not keep it off, unfortunately). Nominal fee. Highly recommended.
  • Weight Watchers - Where it all started. Their program is not for everyone, nor is it successful for everyone who tries it. Their new point-based system makes them more practical than in the past, though I'm still not sure it truly educates about healthy choices.
  • Jenny Craig - an extensive array of online
tools, including a menu-planner and healthy recipes. No more expensive pre-prepared
    meals (unless you want them)!

  • Association for
    Morbid Obesity Support
    - A much more indepth collection of resources for
overcoming Obesity. It includes a list of Doctors in your area who perform
Bariatric surgery, and testimonials from patients of those Doctors.

Building Healthy Eating Habits

  • American Diabetes Association - Not just for diabetics any more. The information at the ADA's website is useful to anyone who wants to develop healthy eating habits, which are essential for keeping weight off once it is lost. Also good for learning about proper portion control.
  • Fit Day - a free website which allows you
to keep a food and exercise journal. It will calculate nutrition based on what
    you've eaten.

Lys, remember me? Kim gave us an update of how you are doing and I came to see your posts. Wow! You must be thrilled with the results of your WLS! Congratulations...and keep up the good work...especially the exercise. I complained about exercising for a year and a half. Then I just sucked it up and did something...I walked in place for 10 minutes.....and I never looked back. It's so funny the things you used to hate, exercise and good foods, are now the things that keep you going strong! Well, good luck and take care!
